Dam water turns Yatır village into swamp
DİYARBAKIR (DİHA) - The dams being built with the aim of so-called "security" in Kurdistan submerge lots of residential areas and historical buildings and these dams cause destruction in the nature.
These infamous dams are victimising the people in the region in all aspects. Tigris Dam, which is within the borders of Diyarbakır, is overbalancing and deranging the nature ecologically. The water of this dam is not flowing underground and it's flowing through the planted areas of Yatır (Şahveliyan) village. The planted areas have turned into swamp as the effluent waste water of the dam is being flowed over the planted areas. This swamp is inhibiting the plant of cotton on these areas. Also, the wage of flowed waste water is being taken by the villagers.
'I cannot plant cotton'
Villager and farmer Mehmet Sıdık Özdemir said he cannot plant cotton on 55-decares arable field on grounds of the effluent waste water of the dam being flowed over his planted areas. Özdemir added: "The evacuation of waste water should be done underground. They have opened small channels of evacuation as the watering channel will not exceed. All the water in these channels are flowing into our arable fields. Our fields have turned into swamp. Above all of these, they are taking the wage of flowed water from us."
'May they come and cut this water'
Hundreds of trees have dried on grounds of the evacuated water, underlined another villager farmer Ramazan Boğa. He added: "We had to pay for the water even though we did not use it. They seized some of my money in the bank because of this wage. May they come and cut this water. Otherwise, we, as villagers, will cut it. The officials shouls find a solution to this question anymore."
