NEWS DESK (DİHA) - A suicide car bomber targeted a convoy of NATO forces near an Afghanistan army checkpoint on Friday. Police said the troops were U.S. soldiers.

The attack killed three Afghan civilians and injured four others, said police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal. No Americans were injured in the attack which occurred near the Jalalabad airport, he added. The incident occurred in the Behsud district of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan, Mashriqiwal said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which was intended to strike American troops, said Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid in a statement. NATO's Resolute Support mission confirmed the attack and condemned the civilian deaths in a statement. "This is another example of the Taliban disregarding the well-being of innocent Afghans and killing them through their indiscriminate attacks."

The ISAF mission in Afghanistan ended in December 2014 and was replaced by Resolute Support mission on January 1, 2015.
