HDP voters celebrating victory in the streets nightlong
NEWS CENTER (DİHA) – In Kurdistan, where the HDP came in first in 14 provinces, celebrations of the HDP victory continued until the morning light. Istanbul also saw large celebrations in Kadıköy.
The main Kurdish city of Diyarbakır was quickly filled with hundreds of thousands of people in every neighborhood of the city as results started to come in. The HDP and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) called the people to march to the Newroz field to avoid police provocations in the streets, where they held dances. The official celebration will take place at 5 p.m. today at the Newroz Field.
Batman, whose percentage of HDP votes shot up by 13% since the last election, had tens of thousands in the streets. The city of Siirt experienced some tension with police at celebrations, but celebrants have called a daytime celebration for this morning. The city of Şırnak, out in force in the streets last night to celebrate being the province with the highest percentage of HDP votes, will start celebrating again this morning as well. Mardin, Urfa and Adıyaman also held celebrations into the late hours of the night.
In Istanbul, where 12.95% of the city's millions of voters went HDP and helped demolish the electoral threshold, the neighborhood of Kadıköy had a huge celebration. Kadıköy had a carnival atmosphere throughout its streets last night and will return to the streets again today at 6 p.m.
In Hakkari's Yüksekova district, where HDP 95% of the voters backed HDP, tens of thousands of people took the streets and celebrated the victory with firework demonstrations. The crowds of people danced traditional Kurdish halays and chanted slogans in support of Kobanê resistance and PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan.
