Turkish police raid NGOs attacked yesterday

DİYARBAKIR (DİHA) - With several dying in contra attacks in Diyarbakır yesterday, police wearing ski masks raided a number of Diyarbakır NGOs this morning.

Yesterday, Aytaç Baran was shot in front of his home in the Şehitlik neighborhood of Diyarbakır. Aytaç was known as the head of Yeni İHYA-DER, a group known for its close ties to the extreme Islamist Hür Dava (Free Cause) Party, or Hüda-Par. Aytaç Baran was rushed to hospital, but died soon after. After the shooting, a group opened fire randomly in the neighborhood. Three were killed and six wounded in the incidents. Later that night, an individual named Fesih Cinaklı was shot in the Sur district. Police made no effort to stop any of the armed attacks.

Several unionists in custody

This morning, armored police vehicles and police officers in ski masks descended in a simultaneous attack on several associations in the Sur, Bağlar and Kayapınar districts of Diyarbakır. The unions of Equal Free Citizen (Eşit Özgür Yurttaş) were raided by police last night. According to initial reports, police took seven members of the unions into custody.

Police broke down doors and seized lists of the associations' directors, members and delegates. There were no arrests in the attacks, said witnesses, who said they heard the masked police speaking Arabic in the incident.
