Young women to open first session of parliament
ANKARA (DİHA) – Five of the six parliamentary representatives who will serve as clerks during the first session of Turkey's newly elected 25th Parliament are women.
Tomorrow the 25th Turkish Parliament will begin its duties with a swearing-in ceremony for the 550 newly elected parliamentary representatives. By Turkish law, the oldest member of Parliament (CHP's Deniz Baykal) will serve as interim chair forthe first session of Parliament. Because the swearing-in of 550 MPs will take at least ten hours, the six youngest MPs have been assigned to aid in chairing the opening ceremony.
After women and youth candidates swept Turkey's June 7 election, in large part thanks to the HDP's victory, five of the six youngest representatives are women. Five young women—Tuğba Hezer, Enise Güneyli and Dilek Öcalan from the HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) and Fatma Gaye Güler and Sena Nur Çelik of the AKP—will sit on the chair's bench. As a result, the majority of those officially opening the 25th Turkish parliament will be women.
After the swearing-in, the Parliament will take a five-day break in which candidates will prepare for the election of a speaker.
