Turkish army restarts construction on 'security cottages'
MARDİN (DİHA) - Turkish soldiers have restarted the construction of military installations that women stopped earlier this month through protest.
At the beginning of July, women sat-in against the construction of military installations in Dargeçit, Turkey (located in the southeastern Mardin province) until soldiers agreed to stop construction. The military installations, which the state calls "security cottages," are being built along a road leading to a planned "security dam," the Ilısu Dam. The dam's construction has been the occasion for heightened militarization in the area.
Since the women ended their sit-in with a commitment from soldiers to stop the construction, the armored vehicles and construction machinery have been out of operation. Yesterday evening, soldiers and construction materials were seen heading to the site of the planned military installations. Local "village guard" paramilitaries and soldiers have announced that construction will begin again on the installations.
