Mother arrested for attending her own son's funeral

ADANA (DİHA) - Police have arrested Sariye Yılmaz, 60, in the province of Adana. The reason for her arrest: attending the funeral of her son, who died fighting in the YPG.

Over recent weeks, police raids targeting activists have continued at a furious pace across Turkey. In the province of Adana, police conducted simultaneous raids on multiple homes in neighborhoods in the Ceyhan district. The arrestees (juveniles among them) have been charged with being part of an illegal organization, conducting crimes for an organizations or simply defying the law on demonstrations for their attendance at various events and actions in Ceyhan since 2014.

60-year-old Sariye Yılmaz has been arrested and taken to the district police station. The reason given for the arrest was that she attended the funeral of her son, Fırat Yılmaz (nom de guerre Erdal Garzan), who died fighting against Daesh in the ranks of the YPG on April 17.

She was released at the evening hours on August 11. The mother spoke to DİHA, noting: "If this is crime to join in my own son's funeral ceremony, then I will commit this crime for times."
