HDK co-spokesperson Tuncel banned from leaving country
ISTANBUL (DİHA) - Following her detention earlier today, HDK (Peoples' Democratic Congress) co-spokesperson Sebahat Tuncel has been imposed a ban on leaving the country.
Tuncel was detained by police at Atatürk Airport earlier this morning within the context of two separate probes over allegedly “spreading propaganda for a terrorist organisation”.
Tuncel was later taken to Bakırköy Courthouse where her testimony was taken in relation with two speeches she had made during an event in Istanbul's Bağcılar district in 2011 and the Newroz celebration in Istanbul in 2013.
Following the testimony, Tuncel was referred to a vacation court with a demand for “judicial control precautions”, after which she was released with a ban on leaving the country.
The ban was grounded on the “type and nature of the crime in question, presence of evidences revealing potential criminal suspicion, current status of evidences, upper limit of the penalty anticipated for the crime in question”.
Speaking to DİHA after her release, Sebahat Tuncel said she doesn't accept the accusation directed at her, stressing that she was probed over her thoughts that she voiced during a Newroz event officially allowed by the governor's office.
Tuncel said her remarks in question were related to the resolution of the Kurdish question, an issue on which the Turkish state itself has talks with the Kurdish leader, Abdullah Öcalan.
