Prisoner relatives with disabilities face torture in prisons
VAN (DIHA) - Physically disabled relatives of prisoners in captivity at the Van M Type Closed Prison see their relatives with difficulty on viewing days due to lack of access for disabled visitors. The prison has no entrance or stairs for disabled access to the viewing hall.
People hoping to see their relatives are in anguish due to the conditions that they are facing. For years, the prison management has ignored that the construction of stairs and disabled access is vital.
Relatives with disabilities visiting with chronic muscle pain or have been diagnosed with osteoclasis risk having permanent and worse problems on their illnesses.
One of the disabled visitors, jailed DIHA reporter Idris Yilmaz's son Mehmet Osman Yilmaz (8), The disabled child is carried by his elderly grandfather and grandmother to the viewing hall because he is diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.
'This is cruelty'
Grandfather Ibrahim Yilmaz points out that the situation is "cruelty" towards prisoners and relatives of prisoners. He says "The problem is not only with my grandson. Many disabled people like my grandson come here to see their relatives, too. All of them face similar matters”.
Yilmaz added “Why does the prison management ignore this? They need a solution to this problem. If my grandson falls from my arms one day, the prison directors are the responsible ones”.
