MARAŞ (DIHA) - The Maraş Massacre, which was ongoing from 19 to 26 December 1978 that started with a bomb thrown into a cinema, caused the death of 150 people and injured over 100 people was a genocide by the neo-fascist grey wolves from the MHP (Nationalist Movement Party), is still fresh in the minds of people today as commemorations have been banned during the month of December.

The spokesperson for DAD (Democratic Alevi Associations) stated that the massacre is being applied in Kurdistan today. She explained that “Children were killed in Maraş, alongside pregnant women who were tortured, the old and young were massacred. This is happening in Cizre. This is the ISIS mentality, there was the mentality of ISIS in 1978. Every where in Kurdistan today, the ISIS mentality is being applied to the lives of people.”

It has been 37 years since the genocide of Maraş has happened. The number of people killed in this massacre is 150 according to local sources, but according to the government it is 111 with over 100 people being injured. During the massacre houses and businesses that belonged to Alevi’s were burnt down, women were raped and the elderly or young were killed.

Insistence on peace and fraternity

Commemorations in the 37th year of the massacre have not been allowed to take place as it has been since the year of 2010. The Alevi Bektas Federation (ABD) General President Baki Duzgun, stated his calls for peace and unity through his words "Alevis and people with other ethnic backgrounds continued asking for peace and brotherhood. The people who are in charge of this country have been after war and conflict. We will continue coming here. We are going to be with our martyrs and continue asking for a life together.”
